Air pollution across India went up even in summer

Air pollution across India went up even in summer

A recent study has revealed a concerning trend in India: air pollution is exceeding national standards even during the summer months. Traditionally, summers in India were considered a respite from the air quality issues that plague the country in winter. However, this study found that PM 2.5 concentrations in major cities consistently surpassed the safety limits throughout April and May from 2022 to 2024.

This rise in summer pollution poses a significant health risk, especially for vulnerable populations like children and the elderly. These groups already experience heightened health problems due to air pollution in winter. The added burden of summer air pollution creates a "double whammy" effect, as heatwaves can further increase dust levels. Experts warn that this trend necessitates immediate action to address air quality issues in India.
